On Tuesday, November 2, 2010 SEA vice president Micheal Vester and I had the opportunity to meet with the Wildrose Alliance Party of Alberta house leader, Rob Anderson. Mr. Anderson is the current MLA for the Airdrie-Chestermere riding. During our short 20 minute interview we were able to establish an understanding of a few of the core principles and policies of his party. The Wildrose Alliance Party is a fiscally conservative, libertarian leaning party. For the alert reader, thoughts of the American Tea Party may spring to mind. However, Mr. Anderson made a great effort to emphasize that the Wildrose Alliance Party is “not a religious right party.” Their policies attempt to underscore that religion has no role in government. If there is a citizen initiative on moral issues policy such as funding for abortion, for example, they prefer a direct democracy approach and allow for a referendum to decide the issue. A similar approach is taken on education policy. A Wildrose Alliance Party government would allow parental preferences to come before those of the government. The next provincial election is likely over a year away. The entrance of the Wildrose Alliance Party on the political scene in Alberta is worthy of notice and careful consideration, especially during these quieter months preceding what could turn out to be a very interesting election. Note:
After this was originally posted, Elaine clarified in the comments that the SEA does not endorse the Wildrose Alliance, nor does she personally. The diverse opinions within the SEA make it unlikely that we would ever endorse a specific political party.
