The Alberta provincial election is on Tuesday, May 5 – get out and vote!
You may have noticed that our usual roundtable event would also be on May 5, we will be moving it to another day, so that all our SEA volunteers can get to the ballots, and our members don’t have to choose one or the other.
The SEA does not support a particular political party; we mostly want you to go and vote, and for you to make an informed choice based on what you value when you cast your ballot. To help with that, here are some resources.
- Elections Alberta: How to make sure you’re on the List of Electors, where to find your polling station, and information about special ballots and advanced polls.
- VoteKit: All the basics for new voters, including video tutorials in 8 languages and opportunities to practice voting before the big day.
- Vote Compass: A questionnaire to help you determine which political party is closest to your priorities.
- Albert Politics: Possibly the best Alberta political blog, with links to candidate webpages and other opinion pieces.

A Supreme Court Ruling this week has stopped prayer in municipal courts in the Quebec town of Saguenay. You can hear Luke (one of the Society of Edmonton Atheists directors) discuss this ruling on Ryan Jesperson’s 630 ched talk show this morning.
Our Vice President Allan Bassil was also interviewed yesterday by CBC Francais, a seven minute interview cut down to a seven second soundbite, and the SEA being represented as ”militant secularists”. Hello everyone!
Our Annual General Meeting was last night and we had a fantastic turn out. General meetings are a requirement for us to remain a non-profit group and aren’t always the most exciting of meetings to sit through, but we did manage to squeeze in a few laughs anyway. Meh!
Our financial statements were reviewed and we had our biggest year yet with campaigns, donations and event takings. We voted and agreed to donate a sponsorship amount for the upcoming AB Secular Conference, which will have us listed as founding sponsors for the life of the conference. It’s great to see our group investing in the secular movement in the province and helping to affect change. I look forward to continually adding value to our memberships and keeping this momentum going. Our paid membership is the largest it’s ever been in SEA’s history, so we’re doing something right! Let’s keep it going!
We voted on a few new lifetime members, had discussions about what kind of things we want to do for the upcoming year and talked about regular events such as Pride Parade, solstice parties and volunteer work. Some new ideas are on the table, such as starting up an atheist parent meet up, and we will also be having regular monthly events that are family friendly over the summer/fall months. At the end of the evening we had a prize draw giveaway for up to date members. Congratulations to Brad F, the winner of the signed copy of The Thinking Atheists (Seth Andrews) book, Deconverted.

Just a reminder that the 2015 Annual General Meeting is tonight (April 7)!
When: 7:00 pm
Where: University of Alberta, Central Academic Building (CAB) room 239 (the campus map has interior maps).
Parking around the University can be pricey, and public transit is probably your best bet. Less expensive parking can usually be found at the Faculty Club parking lot (the surface lot north of Windsor Car Park, 116 St), although it’s a bit of a walk to CAB. We will be headed to Sherlock Holmes just off campus afterwards, and they do have a $5 flat rate, but again, you’ll have to walk to CAB.
