Volunteer Opportunities

What can you do to make to Society of Edmonton Atheists into an organization that you like even more? Help us out with some of your time! To volunteer, please contact us.

We’re looking for more people to contribute to our blog and keep other Edmonton area atheists up to date on the goings-on and news that matters to them. Our website is the first impression that a lot of people have of us, and we want to make sure that it is up to date, and relevant. If you think that you have no idea what to write about that isn’t a problem, we have assignments on specific topics to hand out.

Expectations: less than 2 hrs per month. See the summaries below for specifics.

General interest contributor
  • One blog post a month
  • Can be a few paragraphs discussing a topic
  • Can be two or three sentences on a topic and a link to a longer article
  • Posts must explicitly state why this is relevant to local atheists (Atheists in Edmonton should care about this because…) or be very obvious (Edmonton / Alberta topics)
  • Can overlap with any of the topics below
Separate School Systems specific
  • One blog post a month (or more often if time sensitive issues come up)
  • Liaise with Luke Fevin & co. directly, or keep on top of local news
  • Summary of issues that the duplicate school systems cause.
Local politics watch
  • At least twice a year, more often if things come up
  • Keep an eye on the municipal politicians in your area (does not need to be Edmonton), your MLA, or MP, and write a short post if they do something in their official capacity to demonstrate secular values, to favour a specific religion, or suggest that non-religious citizens are less valued.
  • Information could come from council meeting minutes, newsletters, press releases, or their websites.
Provincial/Federal politics watch
  • At least twice a year, more often if things come up
  • Keep an eye on the Alberta legislature, federal parliament, or a specific department and write a short post if they do something to demonstrate secular values, to favour a specific religion, or suggest that non-religious citizens are less valued.
  • Information could come from the Hansard, press releases, or websites
  • An example would be Bill 44 that came through the legislature a few years ago, making it a human rights issue to not inform parents of religious-related instruction. A politician then stated publically that this would include evolution in science class.
Other groups
  • At least twice a year, more often if things come up
  • Keep up to date on a specific local group that may be of interest to Edmonton area atheists (UAAA, Unitarians, a religious group, whatever)
  • Write a summary of the interesting thigs they’ve been up to and future plans that SEA members might be interested in.
  • Or, interview a member and get their perspective on an issue
  • Or, be very polite during a visit to a church/mosque/etc. and write up a summary of your experience
